Meet Abby Fetel. She is an aromatic, tall, slim and beautiful long-necked Abate Fetel pear. Grown far away in the lands of Italy, she was named after Abbé Fétel, the monk who discovered her in the mid-1400s. She has a yellowish-green mottled complexion with a crisp yet creamy white flesh. She is sweet like honey and has a taste so pure, that she is perfect for both snacking purposes and cooking up a storm. Not sure how she can help you when it comes to cooking? Well baked dishes, pear tarts and cake are her speciality, but she is also great with salads and accompanying meats like pork or chicken.
Meet Fiona Forelle. She is a sweet, luscious and tender Forelle Pear. She gets her name from the Dutch word for trout, forel, because her skin has the same pink blush as a trout. This red blush is complemented by a rich golden-yellow complexion, speckled with adorable freckles. Not sure how she can help you when it comes to cooking? Although she is best known for appearing in winter salads and lunch boxes in fresh form, she adds so much more flavour in warmer dishes and desserts. She really pairs well with aged cheeses such as gorgonzola and camembert as well as ingredients such as pork belly, prosciutto, dried berries, figs, semi-sweet or bitter chocolate and nuts such as hazelnuts and pistachios.
Hi! My name is Danny Smith and I’m a Granny Smith apple. I was discovered in Australia in the 1860s as a seedling growing in the remains of a rubbish tip by Mrs Maria Smith and thanks to her, I’ve been flourishing ever since! I’d say my best features would be my bright green skin and that I’m firm but fair. I keep quite well (i.e., 3 months or more) and I’m known to be tartly sweet, sharp and refreshing, which makes me great when it comes to cooking and baking! Sauces and purées are my specialty but I can also make a superb chilled and simple salad. I’m pretty versatile like that!
Hi! My name is Topsy Red and I’m a Top Red apple. I would say my best features are my beautiful, deep red skin and my gentle, sweet nature. To be honest I’m not great when it comes to cooking or baking but I can brighten up anyone’s day. I’m super sweet like that!
Hi! My name is Dino Delicious and I’m a Golden Delicious apple. I was discovered by a West Virginia farmer at the end of the 19th century where I was then taken up by the famous Stark Brothers nursery, who were so impressed me that they bought my home tree and an area of land around it. I am now planted in all the major warm apple growing areas of the world and am known as one of the world’s great apple varieties. I would say my best features are my natural honey-sweet aroma and golden sun-kissed skin. I’m pretty healthy, grow easily and love to keep in shape. I’m also good in the kitchen and have been known to rustle up a good dish or two. I’m a Jack of All Trades really!
Hi! My name is Perry Packham and I am a Packham’s Triumph pear. I was discovered by Sam Packham and was introduced to the world in the 1890s. I am small in size but you know what they say, dynamite comes in small packages! I would say my best features are my versatility, sweet nature and my fine, smooth texture. I am great at cooking and baking and have been known to make great snacks, dishes and juices across the board!
